Only four months into our company’s history, we are already celebrating a significant achievement: namely ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 accreditation. This is a source of great pride to the company as a whole and, together with the Six Sigma Statistical Analysis System already implemented at our plant, also guarantees our customers the highest product quality and the most efficient service.
Through Seagate Technology (Thailand), and now Fabrinet Co., Ltd., we have built up a partnership with Thailand, which dates back many years. It has been a mutually rewarding partnership and an extremely successful business investment. The hard work and dedication of our staff and management have not only helped secure these awards but have also played a major role in the contract electronics manufacturing industry of the future.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all at Fabrinet Co., Ltd. for their loyalty and hard work, and offer my best wishes for continued success in the years to come
COMPANY PROFILE
A NEW FORCE IN EMS.
Founded in October 1999, Fabrinet Co., Ltd. officially came into being on 2 January 2000, when it took possession of its assembly plant in Pathum Thani. Fabrinet Co., Ltd. is a new EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services) company, and manufactures electronic components by contract for Seagate Technology (Thailand) Ltd. The company currently employs 1,860 staff, who manufacture millions of SMT printed circuit cables and arm assemblies per month. Fabrinet exports exclusively through Seagate, from whom they acquired their assembly plant, including assets and manpower, and from whom they have received a three-year volume purchase agreement for non-core assemblies. The company’s annual revenue will reach over US$200 million for fiscal year 2001, even though currently only 50% of its 200,000 square foot factory and manufacturing area is being used. Evidently, the company is expecting plenty of opportunity ahead and has projected revenues to reach US$1 billion by fiscal year 2005.
The future looks bright for Fabrinet as they enter the new millennium with their sights firmly set on the telecommunications industry. The current Internet and telecommunications infrastructure is no longer sufficient for demand and projected traffic volume purposes - making it imperative to ‘rewire’ the whole world over the next ten years. Fabrinet Co., Ltd. intends to be at the centre of that new growth and to be the global leader in contract electronics manufacturing. The company will supply top-tier telecommunication OEM’s with its products as per two recently signed long-term volume purchase agreements. The electronic manufacturing industry is estimated to reach revenues of US$700 billion annually, with over US$100 billion of this being outsourced. This figure is set to rise dramatically as the industry expands, and, by further developing manufacturing processes in line with customers’ requirements, implementing information technology, developing staff in terms of technical skill, and purchasing state-of-the-art production equipment, Fabrinet intends to be a major player in the EMS sector of the future.
THE MANAGEMENT TEAM
Fabrinet Co., Ltd. was founded last year by Tom Mitchell, who also serves as its president and CEO. One of the pioneers of the disk drive industry, Mitchell was president and co-founder of Seagate and later served as president and COO at Conner Peripherals.
The management team at Fabrinet comprises many other major figures in the disk drive industry, including Teera Achariayapaopan, Ph.D., formerly senior director of HAS/HGA operations for Read-Rite Thailand Co., Ltd., and who now serves as Senior VP and MD of Fabrinet’s Thailand operations. For 10 years, he was also Seagate’s executive director of engineering in Thailand.
Mike Alarid has 23 years of management experience in procurement, materials and manufacturing in high-tech companies and has joined Fabrinet as VP of Materials. Alarid has also worked for Seagate, spending 13 years in various materials and manufacturing management roles.
Mark J. Schwartz has served as legal counsel to high-tech companies in complex financial and operational transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and intellectual property licensing, and joins Fabrinet as General Counsel and Senior VP of Global Finance.
Pornchai Wessatada is the VP of Finance at Fabrinet, with over 10 years of experience in public and corporate auditing. His experience includes being the group controller of private and public companies, where he played a leading role in managing key investments, financial planning and tax accounting.
ISO 9002 & ISO 14001 CERTIFICATIONS
On 26 April 2000, Fabrinet Co., Ltd. was awarded both ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 certifications by UKAS and AJA (Anglo-Japanese-American Registrars), an accomplishment all the more outstanding when one discovers that the company only came into being on 2 January 2000: It has taken Fabrinet a mere four months to achieve this award. Although it took on most of the facilities already in use by Seagate at its Pathum Thani site, there were still rigorous quality and procedural challenges that it had to meet. It is a testament to the company’s long-term commitment to quality and service that Fabrinet has managed to achieve these awards in such a short period of time.
Not only is Fabrinet now ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 certified, but the company, through Seagate, has also implemented the Six Sigma Statistical Analysis System, which ensures the highest possible quality control of their manufactured products and processes. This has put Fabrinet on a truly international footing and will inspire confidence among its customers in terms of product quality and safety, as well as environmental awareness.
THAILAND IS THE BEST MANUFACTURING LOCATION IN THE FAR EAST TOM MITCHELL
The factor which is most impressive about Fabrinet Co., Ltd. is its belief in Thailand. Tom Mitchell decided to locate the company here, based on his 30 years of Asian manufacturing experience, with emphasis on cost, quality and capacity. Before founding Fabrinet, Mitchell was president and co-founder of Seagate Technology, now one of the largest companies in Asia, and he has successfully established high-quality, high-volume manufacturing bases in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, China and India. Seagate employed over 44,000 people in Thailand at the time of the economic boom and has brought another 10 companies into the country. There is no doubt that Mitchell and his partners have brought a tremendous amount of business and growth into Thailand over the last 30 years and they plan to increase this as they enter the telecommunications industry.
But why Thailand? Mitchell explains this very succinctly: “Thailand has a stable political climate, good availability of high-tech labour and a modern and rapidly improving infrastructure. Thailand, the gateway to Southeast Asia, is geographically convenient and easy to access, and it has a strong government that supports a free and open economy. Thailand has all the elements that are conducive for business, stability, consistency and predictability”.
These natural advantages have become apparent to many foreign investors and as business begins to flood into the area, Fabrinet Co., Ltd. stands in a very firm position to enhance both its own prospects and those of Thailand through a mutual respect and positive outlook for the future.
